May-Marie Duwai-Sowa is the publisher and editor-in-chief of  Illuminessence, a lifestyle e-magazine aimed to celebrates Hamilton’s young professional women and their accomplishments.

Born in Sierra Leone, Duwai-Sowa immigrated to North America in 1999. She completed her graduate studies at the University of Guelph and now works as an access and equity specialist with the City of Hamilton. Duwai-Sowa says she loves her day job because it provides an opportunity for her to contribute to community development, public policy, accessibility, anti-racism, diversity, equity and inclusion.

Describing her relationship with Hamilton as “predestined,” she has a “divine love” for the people, culture, and work she does here.

Her two children are her greatest accomplishment, adds Duwai-Sowa. Raising them well with a sense of humanity and humility will be her greatest fulfillment in life.

The best thing about Hamilton, she says, is its “ambition and progressive drive to always reinvent itself despite challenges and setbacks.”

She also admires the love and pride Hamiltonians have for their city.

Her favourite parts of Hamilton include the downtown and she loves Art CrawI, the museums, the festivals, the library, the waterfalls, and the cultural celebrations.
