Martinus Geleynse’s business philosophy is to go where no one else is, and do what no one else is doing.
There’s no question his company MGI Media has done that.
Geleynse came from humble beginnings in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island before his family moved to Flambourough.
His first job was working with the janitors at his father’s church when he was 9. He says he’s been working practically full-time since the sixth grade.
In 2007, Geleynse graduated from Calvin College in Michigan with a BA in Communications Arts and Sciences and in Music. He founded MGI Media just days after walking across the stage — it’s original name World Media Red.
Geleynse traveled the world, pursuing the original business plan of producing media for non-governmental organizations working in international development.
Geleynse has worked in Europe, North and South America, and Africa.
He has been recognized with several awards including Most Promising New Filmmaker at the 24 Hours of Nuremberg (Germany) festival in 2005, the 2010 Young Entrepreneur of the Year award from the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, and the 2013 Top 40 under 40 by the Business Link Media Group.
Geleynse says when he started his company seven years ago, no one was paying attention to Hamilton, and that is why he chose to base his company here. He could tell that the city was right on the cusp of change.
